Age: 23

Nominated by Peter JacobManaging Director:
Umar joined us as a fresh graduate with no PR experience, yet in just over a year, he has demonstrated huge passion for the work and shows a calmness and dedication beyond his years. His growth mindset has seen him flourish across the core elements of media relations, writing and reporting going beyond the task every time by being proactive, insightful, and consistently one step ahead. He’s been front and centre to some of Current Global’s most award-winning work from the world’s first ketchup insurance for Heinz to re-defining ESG communications for Puck’s Selfless Shelves.

Career highlights

With a sudden albeit welcoming approach in to the PR world, the last year (plus a bit more) has been nothing less than a whirlwind. Joining Current Global full-time and earning the opportunity to work across an enormous portfolio of clients, from award-winning ones such as Heinz and Puck, to the ones near and dear to my heart like New Balance and Al Habtoor Motors; not a single day has been boring. My passion for communication through media and influencer relations, crafting content, and strategy has not only shined through but honed across a plethora of industries, styles and campaigns.

Guiding principles

Adaptability, Adaptability, Adaptability. The past year has taught me that life loves to throw curveballs at you left, right, and centre – be it professional, personal, or something else entirely (something my dad warned me about probably around  a million times) But my journey has been all about being able to balance it all, take it within my stride, all while remembering to stay being me.

Side hustle

As an avid reader and writer, I’ve collected first-edition books of several series including the original Harry Potter books (no they’re not for sale), a few John Grisham books and a few others. My love for books has naturally branched me out to try writing, a hobby that I’ve had for years now with poetry, short stories, critical essays, and maybe even an ongoing novel that I hope to one day publish.
